Iverson's Career May be Over

A lot of people on sports radio have been talking about Allen Iverson's leave of absence from the Sixers. Iverson's daughter is ill and he has left the team to take care of her.

I think this will be the end for Iverson. He is up there in years and his body has taken a lot of abuse over many seasons.

Iverson has put in his time in the NBA and has been a true professional. He has always given it his all on the court and is a winner. It would be only fitting for him to retire with the team he started with. He loves the Sixers and the people of Philadelphia have loved him back.

Iverson will always be remembered for talking about practice...

Manny's Final Year With the Dodgers?

This past Monday, Dodger outfielder Manny Ramirez predicted he would not play for the Dodgers next season. This statement got the attention of people all over sports radio.

A lot of people were not surprised by his comments. This is Manny being Manny. Manny doesn't hold back. When he was on the Red Sox, he wasn't afraid to say he wanted to be traded. Manny is a great player, but he can also be a distraction in the clubhouse

I believe this will be his final season with the Dodgers. I think the Dodgers have had enough of him. I also think he is ready to move on. Manny told the LA Times Tuesday that he is going to play three more years in the MLB and then two years in Japan. Who knows what this man is going to do next.

Oregon Football Players Undisciplined

The recent troubles of Oregon football players have got a lot of people talking across sports radio. Oregon has recently suspended backup linebacker Kiki Alonso for the 2010 season, after he was arrested for a DUI early Saturday morning. On Sunday, receiver Jamere Holland was dismissed, after making a Facebook post, where he mistakenly concluded that Alonso was suspended.

Just last week, running back LaMichael James was arrested on domestic charges. About a month ago, three Oregon players were involved in a January 24th fight. Also this past season, running back LeGarrette Blount was suspended eight games for punching a Boise State player in the head.

This team has no discipline and all of this has to fall on head coach Chip Kelly. The role of a head coach is not only to guide the players on the field, but also off the field. If he can't control his players, he has to be fired.

Tim Tebow Adjusts Delivery

Many people across sports radio are talking about Tim Tebow's new delivery. Tebow is changing the way he holds the football by cocking it by his shoulder instead of his waist. He is also working on three and five step drops instead of the shotgun formation that he primarily used with the Florida Gators.

Tebow
will not be participating in this week's scouting combine in Indianapolis. He will instead be showing off his new delivery for his pro day at the University of Florida on March 17th. I believe this is a good choice by Tebow so he has more time to perfect things.

This is all an effort by
Tebow to improve his draft stock. There are a lot of doubts about how good of a quarterback he is going to be in the NFL. There are even some people like ESPN draft expert, Todd McShay, that thinks Tebow can't play quarterback in the NFL.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that our show took on a new format. It is supposed to be a sports show, but we also talk about whatever is going on in our lives. Usually during the second hour , Owl Radio Program Director, Scott Hand, joins us to discuss sports and anything new going on with him.

Mark McGwire Returns to Baseball With a Bang

Last week, there was a lot of talk on sports radio about Mark McGwire's return to baseball. This past off-season, McGwire was named the St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach. There has also been a lot of speculation as to whether McGwire used steroids.

So, about a month ago, McGwire admitted he used steroids in an interview with Bob Costas. Ever since then, people have questioned how good of a hitting coach he is going to be or how much of a distraction he is going to be.

When he arrived at the Cardinals spring training complex in Jupiter, Fl last week, the media was waiting for him. He handled the media's questions very well and then got right to work with some of the hitters.

Coming clean like Tiger Woods and Michael Vick will help him in the long run because it will make him feel better about himself. The best thing to do is to put all of this behind him and focus on making the Cardinals hitters better.

Tiger Woods Issues an Apology

Last Friday, Tiger Woods apologized for his poor actions in front of a select group of people in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl. This was Tiger's first public statement in nearly three months and it was the most anticipated public statement since the Michael Vick apology.

There was a lot of speculation across sports talk radio about what Tiger was going to say. What Tiger said didn't surprise me or many other people. I knew Tiger would not not divulge much information such as the status of his marriage or how sex rehab was going. It was a big PR move to quite the media a little bit. He showed little emotion and was reading from a script, instead of speaking from his heart

During the statement, Tiger said there is no timetable to when he is going to come back. A lot of people across sports talk radio think he should come back as soon as possible because they think the media will focus more on his play rather than his problems.

Look at the Michael Vick situation for instance. The media went crazy when they heard he was involved in a dog fighting ring. Now, you barley hear anything about what took place. When the media now talks about Vick, they discuss how he played this season or where he is going to play next season.

Being an Intern at ESPN 760

I have been an intern at ESPN 760 for 4 weeks now. In my short time here, I have learned many valuable things and have met some great people.

The most valuable thing I have learned is how to edit sound clips. At first, I was intimated by the software, but as time has gone on, I have become more comfortable with cutting up sound. Knowing how to cut up sound is really important to know for me, since I want to get involved in radio broadcasting after college.

A few other things I have learned how to do is to put traffic updates into the computer system and upload pictures onto the website. These tasks may not not be all that fun, but it is good to know as many things as possible.

Two guys that I have become friendly with are Ken LaVicka and Jeremy Marks-Peltz. Ken is a producer and hosts the FAU Sportspage page on Mondays from 6:00 - 7:00pm. Jeremy is also a producer and hosts the JMP show weekdays from 6:00 - 8:00pm. They have been really helpful in showing me how to edit sound and have been really personable.

As an intern, I also cover events outside the studio. I have done events such as Pepsi Samplings and an FAU basketball street team event at the FAU arena. These events give me the opportunity to experience the promotions side of things and to interact with people.

Tim Tebow and His Mom Make Some Noise

Former University of Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother will take part in a 30-second Super Bowl Commercial that will have an anti-abortion message, according to an abcnews.com article. The article also said the commercial will tell the story of her 1987 pregnancy, where after getting ill during a mission trip to the Philippines, she ignored recommendations from doctor's to abort her fifth child and gave birth to Tim.

Evan Cohen, who hosts the Evan Cohen Show weekdays from 3:00 - 6:00pm on ESPN 760, said that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But he also said that this was the wrong forum for this type of message.

I agree with Evan on both of these points. Everyone has the right to their own opinion. That is what makes everyone unique. I also think this is not the right place and time for this type of message. It is only going to cause more controversy.

Look out for this controversial commercial during the big game on Sunday which begins at 6:28pm.

ESPN 760 Teams Up With WPTV

Evan Cohen and Jason Pugh of ESPN 760 are now part of WPTV's sports coverage. The partnership between the two broadcasters is nothing new. Since 2003, ESPN 760 personalities have frequently contributed to WPTV's sports coverage.

Both broadcasters believe this partnership will make local sports coverage in the Palm Beach and Treasure Coast that much better. "This long term- relationship benefits our station by giving us access to a 24-hour sports-focused operation that is affiliated with ESPN, and I think ESPN 760 benefits from the added reach and audience we provide," said Steve Wasserman, WPTV's vice president and general manager.

ESPN 760 provides extensive sports coverage to WPTV with local sports features at 6:00pm and a nightly wrap-up at 11:00pm. ESPN 760 also produces "Braman 5 Sports Live," the 15-minute sports show seen every Sunday after WPTV's 11:00pm newscast.

Evan, who also hosts the Evan Cohen Show during the week from 3:00 - 6:00pm, anchors "Braman Sports Live" and leads the on air effort weeknights for WPTV. Jason, who is a former FAU defensive lineman and ESPN 760 host/reporter, anchors the sports segments on Fridays and the weekends.

"This is a bold and exciting development for local sports coverage, and there aren't two better resources to make it happen than ESPN 760 and WPTV," said Steve Politziner, ESPN 760's vice president and general manager. "Great things can happen when two media companies at the top of their game join forces. ESPN 760 brings great assets to channel 5's newscast, and we're thrilled to have our brand extended through the reach of the area's most-trusted news operation."

Dwight Freeny's Status for the Superbowl

A popular talking point across sports talk radio this week is whether Dwight Freeney of the Indianapolis Colts is going to play this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints in the Superbowl. Freeney suffered a torn ligament in his right ankle and has not be able to practice all week.

Dwight
Freeney is one of the Colts best players. He is a speed rusher that comes off the edge and he also makes everyone around him better. The Colts won't be as effective without him in the line up.

Many Colts fans are very concerned at this point. The Colts defense has played a key role in the playoffs and hopes to do the same against the Saints.

He is rehabbing his ankle everyday and
he is going to try to get on the field for Sunday's Superbowl. For updates on his status, visit http://espn.go.com/.

FAU Sportspage with MikeJarvis

The FAU Sportspage is an ESPN 760 radio show that focuses on the the men's basketball team. Every Monday from 6:00 - 7:00pm at Boston's on the Beach in Delray Beach, head basketball coach Mike Jarvis joins Ken LaVicka of ESPN 760 to discuss previous and upcoming games.

Last night, they touched on the win against FIU on Saturday night. This was their fifth consecutive victory and it improved their record to 8-3 in the Sun Belt Conference. Jarvis said he was really pleased with his teams effort, especially with them putting up 106 points on the board. He also said his coaching staff was not very happy with the defense and that was something they were going to focus on in practice.

Later on in the show, they talked about the upcoming game against the University of Denver. With the high altitude being a big factor, Jarvis said he likes to walk around outside with his team before the game so they can get used to it. He also said he is going to have to monitor the big men more closely during the game because they are usually more affected by the thin air.

The ESPN 760 street team is also at the show every Monday giving away free prizes such as t-shirts and food vouchers to McDonald's. There is also an opportunity to win tickets to a Heat or Panthers game.
